Awka: Mr Patrick Obianyo, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Anambra, has emerged as the standard bearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) party for the November 8 Anambra Governorship Election. Obianyo was unanimously nominated through a voice vote at a congress held in Awka on Tuesday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chief Anayo Arinze, Deputy National Chairman for Electoral Matters of ADC, chaired the congress and presented Obianyo with the flag of the party. Arinze highlighted that ADC has been participating in all Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) elections for the past 19 years since its founding, with a presence from the State House of Assembly to presidential constituencies. He expressed confidence in Obianyo’s candidacy, stating that the party is poised to spring surprises in the upcoming election by pursuing it with innovative ideas.
In his acceptance speech, Obianyo expressed gratitude to the party members for their confidence in him and for nominating him for the contest. He emphasized that the principles of accountability and commitment in leadership, which are foundational to ADC, align with his personal philosophy. Obianyo declared his mission to change the leadership narrative in Nigeria, pledging to focus on sectors such as education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, security, and workers’ welfare if elected.
Obianyo outlined plans to reintroduce bursaries and make education compulsory, while also giving significant attention to healthcare. He also addressed the issue of insecurity and crime, proposing solutions such as employment creation and business support. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of prioritizing the welfare of civil servants, describing the Civil Service as the engine room of governance that has been neglected by successive administrations.
In conclusion, Obianyo called on party members to support his candidature and work towards ensuring victory for the ADC in the upcoming election.
