Post: Anambra House of Assembly Partners With NDLEA To Combat Drug Abuse

In a significant move to tackle rising drug abuse in the region, the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze, joined forces with a delegation from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Anambra State Command.

The meeting, led by Commander of Narcotics Daniel Onyishi, aimed to foster collaboration in the fight against drug-related issues.

During the session, Commander Onyishi delivered a compelling presentation that highlighted the alarming increase in women engaging in drug activities.

He urged lawmakers to leverage their grassroots connections, asserting that their involvement is crucial in combating this pressing issue. His message was clear: a united front is essential to address the growing menace of drug abuse.

A key takeaway from Commander Onyishi’s address was the urgent need for rehabilitation centres across Anambra’s various zones.

He advocated for the establishment of community-based committees to aid in the response to drug abuse, emphasizing the curre
nt shortfall in facilities designed to accommodate and rehabilitate drug addicts. This lack of resources leaves many individuals without the necessary support for recovery.

Furthermore, Commander Onyishi called attention to the need for land to construct NDLEA barracks and for improved mobility resources, which would enable the agency to extend its reach to remote villages.

In response, Mr. Udeze reassured the NDLEA of the Assembly’s commitment to this vital battle. He acknowledged the detrimental impact of drug misuse on societal decay and emphasized the need for collective action.

The members of the Assembly also proposed a strategic initiative to advocate for the transfer of the NDLEA from the exclusive list of the Federal Government to the concurrent list.

‘This transition would empower state legislatures to formulate laws tailored to address local challenges, paving the way for a more effective and localized response to drug abuse.

‘This meeting serves as a rallying cry in a global struggle against
drug abuse, reaffirming that this is a fight that transcends borders.’
