The Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the Kano State Government in Northwest Nigeria to unravel the circumstances that led to destructions of lives and properties worth billions of Naira during August 1st protest, has begun work.
The Panel pledged to be fair in the conduct of the assignment.
The Chairman, Retired Justice Lawan Mahmoud at an Inaugural meeting said, the Commission would leave no stone unturned in finding those involved directly or indirectly with a view to find lasting solutions for reoccurrence.
He said, ‘the Commission will thoroughly investigate and find out individuals, groups of persons or institutions directly or indirectly responsible for these gross misconducts, including their respective roles in triggering the unrest and the destructive consequences that led to the loss of human lives.’
Justice Mahmoud explained that, ‘the Commission taget to establish the remote and immediate causes of the first week of August 2024 breach of peace, wanton destruction of Public and Private
properties, Looting, Arson and killings in Kano.
‘We will ascertain the extent of damage to properties, loss of lives and
valuables and make appropriate recommendations.’
He said that, ‘the Commission will do its best to deliver the task before it, as the doors of the Commission will be open to public for submission
of both oral and written memoranda that will guide in the discharge of its
assignment.
‘We therefore appeal to the general public to be bold enough and support
the Commission with relevant evidence and facts that will assist towards preparing our reports, including far reaching recommendations that will aid and forestall the re-occurrence of such incidents in future.’
Retired Justice Mahmoud called on the media to be objective and ensure fairness in reporting the Commission’s proceedings, promising to provide clarifications in any ambiguous situation.
He said; ‘the protest had brought about breach of public peace, wanton destruction of public and
private properties, arson, looting and ki
lling of innocent lives in the State.’
Already, the Commission had began visiting damaged sites among them, the Kano State High Court Complex and Kano Printing Press.
Other vandalized public and private sites are expected to be visited by the Commission of inquiry withing the stipulated one month of it’s assignment.
The State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf had on the 2nd of September, inaugurated the 14-member committee following the destructions of lives and properties during the August 1st Nationwide protest.
