Post: CNG Conversion Centre in Calabar Remains Non-Operational One Year Post-Inauguration

Calabar: Motorists in Calabar are urging the Federal Government to activate the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and training centre, which has remained inactive since its inauguration. The centre, located in the heart of Calabar, was inaugurated by the state governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, on October 18, 2024, as part of a presidential initiative to promote affordable and sustainable energy following the removal of fuel subsidies.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the centre has not commenced operations since its inauguration. The initiative aimed to provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuel sources, yet the centre remains locked and unused.

Local commercial transport operator, Mr. Sylvanus Ada, expressed frustration over the lack of response to inquiries about vehicle conversion. He mentioned that transport leaders were present at the inauguration and were informed of a N500,000 fee for vehicle conversion to CNG compatibility. Despite the cost, interest remained high due to the potential economic and environmental benefits. However, no progress has been made since.

Similarly, Mr. Jonas Peter, a commercial driver in the area, lamented the lack of activity at the centre, describing it as disappointing. He noted that his scepticism during the inauguration about the initiative’s viability has been confirmed by the current situation.

In response, the state government acknowledged delays but reaffirmed its commitment to the initiative. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Ekpenyong Cobham, assured that efforts are underway to reduce transportation costs. He mentioned that the management of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) is expected to visit the state soon, emphasizing that abandoning such a beneficial project is not an option for Cross River.
