Umuahia: The Abia State Disability Commission has taken a significant step in supporting individuals with albinism by distributing free sunscreen lotions to at least 100 beneficiaries across the state. The initiative was carried out on Friday to help protect their skin against the risk of cancer.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the beneficiaries were selected from various local government areas. The commission’s Chairman, Mr. David Anyaele, highlighted during the distribution event in Umuahia that this effort aligns with Gov. Alex Otti’s commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities, particularly those with albinism. Anyaele emphasized the challenges faced during the dry season, noting that appropriate sunscreen lotion can provide crucial support.
Anyaele further elaborated on the prevalence of skin cancer among persons with albinism and stressed that prevention through the provision of sunscreen is a key strategy. He assured that while currently only 100 individuals are being supported, the distribution will be an ongoing exercise to extend aid to more people over time.
In response, Mr. Enyinnaya Nwosu, Chairman of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, Abia Chapter, expressed gratitude to the state government for this pioneering initiative. He mentioned the existence of approximately 1,000 people with albinism in the state and discussed ongoing efforts, including radio interviews and sensitization programs, to connect with members across all 17 local government areas.
