Commission Releases 200,000 Bags of Rice, Others for N/E States


The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has released 200,000 bags of rice for

victims of flood in North East states, the states comprising Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe,Taraba and Yobe.

The Managing Director, of the NEDC, Alhaji Muhammad Goni Alkali, made this known in Maiduguri while presenting the grain and other items.

Alkali said that other items included 150,000 cartons of macaroni/spaghetti, 250,000 gallons of vegetable cooking oil, 200,000 pieces of mats, 200, 000 pieces of blankets,30,000 pieces of brocade, 20,000 pieces of mosquito nets, 65,000 pieces of clothing materials, and children’s wears and clothes, to the six states of the region.

Alkali-added that ‘The Commission will use the Political structures in the Northeast, consisting of 18 Senatorial districts, 48 Federal constituencies , to distribute the relief materials to the flood disaster victims in each of the six states’.

Goni Alkali, who concluded a tour of some states affected by flood, said, the support was part of immediate me
asures taken by the commission which has short term and long term plans for the region, according to him, due to the current massive flooding in Maiduguri caused by the breakdown of Alau Dam, the commission has released some allocation of food and non food

items for the victims, added that, the commission, will review and re-award the contract for the Dam’s complete rehabilitation which was damaged by the flood, according to him, the commission’s intervention are short-term and they have a policy dimension for medium and long-term intervention plans for the overall development in the region.

The relief materials were handed over to the state government at the NEDC warehouse in Flour Mills area, Maiduguri after briefing the Journalist.
