Post: COP 30: Shettima Tasks Global Leaders on Reasonable Action Against Climate Change


Bel©m: Vice-President Kashim Shettima has tasked global leaders on taking ‘reasonable action’ and moving from pledges to performance in tackling climate change. Shettima made the call at the opening of the Heads of State Summit at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 30), in Bel©m, Brazil. He also implored world leaders to be more proactive in curtailing climate change attendant natural disasters that have claimed innocent lives and rendered many homeless across the globe.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Shettima emphasized the importance of moving from ambition to action, urging that COP30 be remembered as a pivotal moment for global climate action. Representing President Bola Tinubu, he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to achieving a 32 percent emission reduction target by 2035. The Vice-President detailed Nigeria’s climate finance architecture aimed at attracting investments in clean energy and adaptation, highlighting the country’s dedication to preserving the planet for future generations.



Shettima stressed the need for an equitable climate action architecture, particularly for developing nations, asserting that Nigeria is an integral part of the solution. He expressed hope that Africa could lead in various climate initiatives, including carbon capture and renewable energy expansion, while highlighting Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate globally for a more resilient world.



Furthermore, Shettima introduced the National Carbon Market Framework, designed to align with the Paris Agreement and support affected communities through a newly established Climate Change Fund. The Nigerian government has also launched a five-year Carbon Market Roadmap to establish an Emissions Trading System and Carbon Tax Regime, supported by fiscal incentives for clean industrial innovation.



The event also featured remarks from UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who highlighted the urgent need for a paradigm shift to address climate overshoot and mitigate its severe consequences. He called for rapid and comprehensive action to restore global temperatures to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.



Brazilian President Lula Inacio Da Silva emphasized the collective efforts required to combat climate change, advocating for global collaboration and the involvement of all societal sectors. He stressed the alignment of climate justice with broader social issues like poverty and inequality.



Prince William, representing King Charles, encouraged decisive commitment to safeguarding the natural world for future generations, urging collaboration over division in addressing climate challenges.
