Economic Council Calls For Support For NASENI, TETFUND.


Abuja: The National Economic Council has urged the Federal government and the National Assembly to sustain the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), for the betterment of Nigerians. The Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, made this known to State House Correspondents on Thursday while briefing them at the end of the 144th NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, at the Council Chamber, State House, Abuja.

According to Voice of Nigeria, Governor Zulum highlighted the Council’s observations on the positive contributions of TETFUND to the growth and development of tertiary education across the country. He also noted that the rationale behind the establishment of NASENI was discussed, emphasizing the agency’s success in fulfilling its mandate of reducing dependency on hydrocarbons in Nigeria.

Observations were made on the positive impact of TETFUND on education growth and development. Additionally, the rationa
le behind NASENI’s establishment, which aims to encourage the production of local goods and services, thereby reducing reliance on hydrocarbons, was acknowledged. Governor Zulum urged the federal government and the National Assembly to continue supporting these agencies for the betterment of Nigerians.

Zulum further revealed that the Council commended the efforts of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) in supporting the education of less privileged students. The Council deliberated on the well-being of Nigerians and acknowledged the support provided by the student loan board to underprivileged students.

Speaking on NEC’s concerns regarding the inconsistency of the National Social Register (NSR), Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, stated that the Council has called for a social register that is devoid of politics. He emphasized the importance of governance as a serious business, affecting the lives of millions of Nigerians, and highlighted the need for an accurate social register free from political inf
luence.
