ECOWAS Calls for United Front Against Terrorism After Deadly Attack in B©nin


Abuja: ECOWAS has solicited the full support of member states for the operation of its regional counter-terrorism initiative, the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF), following the recent terrorist attack on B©nin Republic. ECOWAS President, Dr Omar Touray, made this known in a statement issued by the commission’s spokesman, Joel Ahofodji, in Abuja.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, about 54 soldiers were killed in the terrorist attack in northern Benin on April 17, as reported by the Beninese government spokesman, Wilfried Houngbedji. Touray, who condemned the attack, described the incident as a ‘barbaric, cowardly and heinous act’, which aimed at sowing terror and destabilising the subregion.



Touray emphasized the urgent need for enhanced collaboration and support of member states, by pooling security resources together to effectively tackle the menace. Expressing profound dismay and shock, ECOWAS learned of the tragic event which resulted in many casualties and injuries.



ECOWAS has strongly condemned the attack, referring to it as a barbaric act that aims to destabilize member states. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, on behalf of the ECOWAS institutions and West African citizens, extended condolences to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Benin, while wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.



Touray reiterated ECOWAS’ unwavering support and solidarity with the President of B©nin Republic, its Government, and citizens amidst the ordeal. He assured that ECOWAS stands firmly by the Beninese authorities in their determination to combat terrorism and ensure the security of their citizens and territory.



This incident highlights the urgent need for cooperation among member states, especially those sharing common borders. Touray stressed that pooling security efforts is crucial for mounting an effective response to terrorist groups threatening the region’s peace and stability.



ECOWAS remains committed to working with regional states in implementing its counter-terrorism strategy, including the operationalization of the Standby Force. The organization calls on all partners to support national and regional efforts in eradicating this threat.
