Abuja: Former chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) have reaffirmed their loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu, pledging support for his re-election in 2027. At a meeting in Abuja, the former CPC leaders described the formation of the APC as a significant achievement and commended President Tinubu’s leadership since he assumed office in May 2023.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, former Governor of Nasarawa State, Sen. Umaru Al-Makura, stated that the Tinubu-led administration was advancing the economy. He urged members to start grassroots mobilization to ensure the President’s victory in the upcoming 2027 elections. Al-Makura praised the efforts to revive the spirit of commitment and perseverance that initially founded the CPC, describing Tinubu as a leader well-prepared to lead the nation.
Al-Makura acknowledged the initial challenges faced by the administration but expressed optimism about the country’s future. He called on members to return to their constituencies to galvanize support for the President, emphasizing the importance of mobilizing support to ensure President Tinubu’s success in the 2027 elections. He also mentioned that the steering committee would soon convene a meeting of all state chapters to develop a unified framework for early campaign mobilization.
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu Masari, supported the call for Tinubu’s re-election, citing the need to consolidate ongoing economic reforms. Masari praised the President’s determination and courage in addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges, emphasizing that true leadership is demonstrated during challenging times. He explained that the President’s policies aim to prevent the country’s economic collapse.
Former APC National Secretary, Waziri Bulama, commended the leadership of past CPC officials and reaffirmed the ideological foundation of the merger that led to the formation of the APC. He described the APC as a significant achievement, highlighting its reputation as a national, principled party that has earned Nigerians’ trust by winning three consecutive presidential elections.
Former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, praised members for their loyalty over the past 23 years, often without political appointments. He urged them to maintain their faith and support the government’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, which he stated had benefited a few at the expense of the majority. Okechukwu noted that state governors were now the main beneficiaries of increased federal allocations resulting from this policy, stressing that the APC must fulfill its promises to the people.
The meeting was perceived as a strong show of solidarity from a key legacy bloc within the ruling party, reaffirming their support for the Tinubu administration and emphasizing early preparations for the 2027 elections. The CPC merged with other political parties in 2013 to form the APC, which subsequently won the 2015 presidential election.
