Abuja: Former Commandant, Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), retired Maj.-Gen. Patrick Akpa, has urged officers of the Short Service Course 33 to sustain brotherhood forged in service and prepare deliberately for post-retirement life. Akpa gave the advice on Saturday night at the inaugural reunion dinner of SSC 33 to mark their 22nd anniversary in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Akpa expressed a deep connection to the course due to his involvement in planning the intake as Military Secretary and his role as commandant when they graduated from NDA. He emphasized the enduring bond shared by course mates, describing it as a brotherhood built on shared experiences and challenges during training.
Akpa commended the initiative of SSC 33 to organize a reunion while many members were still in service, calling it a commendable example. He praised the event’s theme, ‘Legacy for Excellence, Uniting for a Greater Tomorrow,’ noting that reunions offer unique opportunities for officers to reconnect with colleagues, families, and widows of fallen classmates.
The retired general also acknowledged the sacrifices of military wives and widows, highlighting their contributions to national development and the burdens they bear, particularly during frequent deployments and counter-insurgency operations. He stressed the importance of never abandoning widows whose husbands made the ultimate sacrifice.
Regarding career progression, Akpa advised officers that promotion is based on merit and not entitlement, reminding them that the value of an officer lies in their actions, not just their rank. He urged serving officers to plan for retirement early, warning of the ‘addictive’ nature of military life and the importance of securing a stable future.
He emphasized the need for careful planning in post-service ventures, advising against rushing into high-risk investments or letting others manage their businesses. Akpa concluded by lauding the reunion’s significance and expressing hopes for a bright collective future for SSC 33 members.
Earlier, the President of SSC 33, Col. Ikechukwu Akabike, described the 22nd anniversary and reunion as a celebration of enduring camaraderie, sacrifice, and service to the nation. He highlighted the shared experiences and trials that have strengthened their bonds and continued to support and inspire one another.
Akabike reflected on the challenges and sacrifices of military training, emphasizing the development of character, courage, and dedication among officers. He also paid tribute to departed colleagues, affirming that their memories and legacies continue to inspire the group.
