JONAPWD Demands Inclusion In Anambra Local Government Elections

The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), has called for the prioritization of the inclusion of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the forthcoming local government elections in Anambra State.

In a statement issued in Awka on Thursday, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke, the Anambra State Chairman of JONAPWD, urged the removal of barriers that obstruct active participation of PWDs in the electoral process.

Okeke highlighted the fundamental rights of PWDs and the importance of their representation in politics. He appealed to authorities, including political parties, to facilitate greater participation of PWDs in the electoral process, asserting, ‘In every democratic setting, the essence of holding elections is to give a voice to every citizen, ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented.’

Despite advancements in promoting inclusivity within Anambra State, Okeke lamented that PWDs still encounter specific challenges that impede their electoral engagement. He remarked, ‘A society is
not solely judged by how the majority are treated, but also by how the minority are supported and empowered.’

He stressed that individuals with disabilities constitute a significant segment of the state’s population, and their experiences and perspectives are crucial in shaping vibrant communities and governance.

Okeke further pointed out various forms of exclusion from electoral processes, such as placing ballot boxes in inaccessible locations for PWDs or subjecting individuals who assist them with transportation to harassment by security agents on election day. He condemned political parties that schedule meetings without considering accessibility and necessary accommodations for PWDs.

He called for a shift in the mindset that perpetuates the belief that PWDs cannot hold leadership or elective positions, noting that such attitudes are detrimental not only to PWDs but also to principles of equity and fairness.

Emphasizing the need for proactive measures, Okeke urged authorities, political parties, and th
e electoral body to comply with the Anambra State Disability Rights Law. He underscored that the participation of individuals with disabilities is not merely a matter of rights but is vital for cultivating a more inclusive and representative democracy.

To ensure the inclusion of PWDs in the upcoming elections, Okeke proposed several actionable steps, including making polling stations and election materials accessible, conducting awareness campaigns, consulting organizations representing PWDs, providing training and support to electoral staff, and encouraging the representation of PWDs in political offices.

He further advocated for the implementation of measures that would support the full integration of PWDs into the democratic process, stressing the importance of their voices and insights in decision-making.
