Post: Kogi Government Refutes Allegations of Local Government Fund Misappropriation

Abuja: Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, has refuted allegations of misappropriation of local government funds in the state. Fanwo, while addressing a news conference in Abuja, described the claims as false, politically driven, and aimed at misleading the public.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Igala Youth Council (IYC) led a protest in Abuja on November 20, accusing the Kogi State Government of persistent unlawful interference with local government finances, which are constitutionally meant to be autonomous. The protesters, supported by civil society organizations, claimed to have gathered evidence over several months to support their allegations.

Fanwo emphasized that such claims are baseless and serve a political agenda to tarnish the reputation of the governor and the state government. He stated, “Silence can unintentionally empower misinformation. We are a government committed to transparency, accountability and the right of our citizens to accurate information.”

He further assured that local government autonomy is fully operational in Kogi, with councils independently handling their finances and development programs. “The governor of Kogi does not tamper with local government funds. This administration’s role is limited strictly to coordination and capacity support where required,” Fanwo stated.

To reinforce transparency, Fanwo mentioned that all 21 local government councils in the state publish their financial statements on the official government website, accessible to journalists, civil society, and the public. He challenged the petitioners to identify any state in Nigeria with a more transparent local government financial reporting system.

Fanwo also highlighted various developmental initiatives in the state, such as remodeled healthcare centers and improved water facilities. Furthermore, local governments have trained youths in CNG conversion and installation, providing them with technical skills and livelihood opportunities.

He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to infrastructure, security, salary payments, rural development, and education, under the leadership of Governor Ododo. Tosin Olokun, Executive Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Council, supported Fanwo’s statements, confirming that the state government does not interfere with local allocations or internally generated revenue, enabling the council to focus on development projects.
