Lagos Introduces Digital Initiative for Malaria Eradication

Lagos: Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced a new digital initiative aimed at eradicating malaria, emphasizing its potential to enhance the socio-economic development of the region. The governor’s remarks were made during his keynote address at the launch of the Pathway to Malaria Pre-elimination Digitalisation Programme in Lagos.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significant impact of malaria on the state’s productivity and household income, noting its particular burden on low-income families. He stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and children under five, and the need for regular malaria testing to prevent self-medication.

The governor described the new programme as a beacon of hope that leverages digital tools to monitor malaria cases in real time, signifying a shift towards innovative and collaborative approaches in combating the disease.

Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health, praised Lagos State for its pioneering efforts. He recalled the initiatives started during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as governor, which inspired similar projects in other states, and commended the current administration for its continued commitment to malaria eradication.

Prof. Akin Abayomi, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the importance of proper testing and treatment for those feeling unwell. In a demonstration of the programme’s capabilities, malaria tests were conducted on both the governor and the minister at the event, with both results returning negative.
