Damaturu: A non-governmental organisation, Connected Development (CODE), has called on the Yobe State Government to domesticate the Disability Rights Act. The appeal was made by Alhaji Modu Muazu, the State Support Team Lead for CODE’s ‘Project Trust,’ during a stakeholders’ engagement held on Wednesday.
According to Voice of Nigeria, Muazu voiced concerns regarding the protracted delay in enacting the Disability Rights Bill into law, highlighting that the bill had already undergone its first and second readings in 2021. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the state government not only passes the bill into law but also implements it effectively to benefit people with disabilities.
Muazu pointed out that individuals with disabilities encounter considerable accessibility challenges in both government and private buildings throughout the state. He affirmed CODE’s commitment to advocating for the rights of people with disabilities through public awareness campaigns and continued engagement with govern
ment officials.
Malam Adamu Haruna, the Deputy Director of Legislation at the Yobe State House of Assembly, confirmed the bill’s progress, stating it had passed its initial readings and was currently awaiting endorsement by the state executive council. He expressed confidence that the executive branch would take the necessary actions to enact the legislation.
