The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) is in the process of establishing the inaugural Public Relations and Leadership University (PRLU) in Nigeria.
The forthcoming university is poised to become the world’s inaugural public relations university upon the commencement of its academic operations in 2026. The institution is dedicated to promoting accessibility, achieving academic distinction, and fostering sustainable leadership.
While inaugurating the Project Implementation committee, the Former Nigeria Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, stressed that maintaining academic excellence hinges on strategic leadership that prioritizes the university’s reputation and longevity.
He underscored the critical need for the university to be easily accessible through multiple transport routes, including highways, railways, and airways.
‘The institution should occupy a prominent location in a picturesque setting, as per the agreement reached at the leadership forum.
‘In terms of academic standard
s, Gana stated that the university must uphold a zero-tolerance policy for mediocrity.
‘The institution is a breeding ground for innovation, idea incubation, and impactful research. Attracting and retaining top-tier talent from around the globe is paramount, he asserted, cautioning that academic merit should supersede connections in faculty promotion,’ Prof Gana said.
The Former Minister, envisioned the university as a leader in public relations education, with a steadfast commitment to research and innovation woven into its mission.
Outlining key strategies integral to developing a world-class university, Gana stressed that top-notch faculty forms the foundation of academic excellence, calling for elevated benchmarks in teaching and research, alongside robust faculty development programs, to cultivate an innovative research culture.

at both students and faculty are equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in an evolving academic landscape,’ he added.
Also speaking, the President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr Ike Neliaku emphasized that public relations is essential for leadership, and leadership, in turn, enhances public relations.
‘We believe that to be an effective public relations practitioner or communicator, you must possess leadership qualities.
‘Leadership is both an art and a science, requiring research, just like public relations. So, you cannot separate leadership from communication, nor can you separate communication from leadership.’
The project implementation committee were commended for the formidable challenge of planning a world-class university and the seriousness of their assignment, which aims to place the university on the global academic stage.
