NNPC Foundation Launches Free Cataract Surgeries for 1,300 Beneficiaries in North-West

Zaria: The NNPC Foundation has commenced a free cataract surgery programme in the North-West to restore sights and improve lives of thousands of individuals in the region.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the foundation, inaugurated the programme in Zaria. She announced that no fewer than 6,000 patients would benefit from the free cataract extraction surgeries across the country. Arukwe highlighted that most of the geo-political zones of the country had benefitted from the programme, with the North-West set to have 1,300 beneficiaries out of the 6,000.

The initiative began with the South-West, followed by the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones, and has now reached the North-West. The NNPC Foundation serves as the impact arm of the NNPC, focusing on health and education interventions among other areas. Arukwe emphasized that medical interventions are a major focus due to the challenges Nigerians face in accessing improved medical services.

In addition to cataract surgeries, the foundation offers educational interventions and initiatives in the energy sector and environment. Arukwe noted that cataracts are preventable and are a significant cause of blindness. The foundation is thrilled with the ongoing surgeries and the positive impact of individuals regaining their sight, enabling them to contribute to the development of their families, state, and the nation.

The managing director also mentioned other health interventions by the foundation, including cancer screenings for almost 3,000 patients and cardiac operations performed by the Cardiac Society on patients with heart diseases.

Hajiya Umma Ahmed, Commissioner for Health representing the Kaduna State Government, commended the foundation for the intervention. She noted that the initiative is restoring sight, hope, dignity, and productivity to individuals who might have otherwise suffered from avoidable blindness due to cataracts. Ahmed stated that the programme aligns with Governor Uba Sani’s health vision, which prioritizes equitable and quality healthcare access for all. She reiterated the state government’s commitment to strengthening collaborations with stakeholders like the NNPC Foundation to deliver life-changing health services to the people.
