NTF to boost wheelchair tennis development

The Secretary General of Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Shammah Makpa says plans are underway to boost wheelchair tennis development in Nigeria.

Makpa told the Newsmen on Monday in Abuja that the federation was committed to taking wheelchair tennis competitions to the nooks and crannies of the country.

According to him, after the successful hosting of the World Team Cup for wheelchair tennis in 2023 and 2024 in Nigeria, the federation was looking to consolidate and build a competitive base for the national team.

‘The approach includes preparing Nigerian wheelchair athletes for other international championships, ensuring that they represent Nigeria and the African continent effectively.

‘Past successes indicate that Nigerian players can excel in these events through the federation’s motivation to keep expanding wheelchair tennis.

‘This aligns with the federation’s aim to open new pathways for these athletes to develop in the country.

‘I believe that increasing wheelchair tennis events will create more
opportunities for athletes, which in turn will improve their performance on the global stage.

‘The federation remains dedicated to fostering talent inclusion in Nigerian sports,’ he said.

Makpa said that Nigeria was also exploring ways to host the World Team Cup tournament as part of efforts to further develop the sport.

He stressed the need for all stakeholders to support the NTF in promoting the sport and nurturing local athletes to stardom.
