Post: Sokoto: Teaching Hospital Records 748 cases of Infertility in 4 years

A Consultant Obstetrics Gynecology, from Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Professor Abubakar Panti, said the hospital records about 748 infertility cases between 2019 to 2023.

Professor Panti stated this at the hospital quarterly clinic presentation on a topic titled ‘Infertility: A Common Gynaecological Problem in Sokoto’.

According to him, Nigeria account for about 20-30% of infertility rate worldwide and Sokoto state alone account for 15.7%.

He said infertility is the failure of couple to achieve pregnancy after one year of regular unprotected coitus of at least 3 times per week.

He noted that it has psychological and sociological pressure which results to marital disharmony, physical violence against women and suicidal tendencies.

Professor Panti said the main factors responsible for infertility in both male and female include consumption of illicit drugs, cigarette or tobacco, Alcohol adding weights as well as previous untreated or poorly treated sexual transmitted diseases among othe
rs.

‘ Consuming illicit drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, anabolic-androgenic steroids, opiates and methamphetamines causes infertility particularly on women’, he said.

He also said the most appropriate treatment for a couple with infertility depends on the identified causes.

Professor Panti urged couple with infertility problem to always refers themselves to appropriate healthcare facility for proper diagnosis and treatment.

The Consultant Obstetrics Gynecology thanked the hospital management and clinical presentation committee for their support, encouragement and opportunity given to him to educate and enlighten the general public on infertility.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Anas Sabir, commended the presenters for their indepth investigation and explanation on infertility.

He also applauded the hospital clinical forum under the leadership of professor Mansur O. Raji, and his Secretary Atiku Abubakar Yabo, for their commitments and towards always ensuring
successful conduct of the excercise.

The CMD assured the hospital adequate support to the forum to continue to enlighten the general public for overal health benefits of the communities.

Highlight of the event was also a presentation by Professor E. I Nwobodo, on Infertility, award of certificates to the presenters, questions and answers which was coordinated by the moderator of the presentation, Professor Karima Tunau, the immediate past Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto among others.
