Abuja: The NNPC Foundation Ltd. has initiated the distribution of 25,000 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) textbooks and mini libraries to 25 secondary schools across the country. The initiative aims to bridge the gap in technological innovation and advancement.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Ltd., announced this development on Monday during the unveiling of 1,000 STEM books and a mini science library at the School for the Gifted in Gwagwalada, Abuja. The NNPC Foundation, the social impact arm of NNPC Limited, has been undertaking key initiatives in education, empowerment, health, the environment, and access to energy to boost socio-economic development since its inception in 2023.
Arukwe stated that this donation marks the second phase of the initiative. In 2024, the foundation donated 15,000 STEM books to 15 schools in the six geopolitical zones of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). She emphasized the importance of equipping youth with relevant skills to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technological world and foster economic development.
The unveiling at the School for the Gifted is part of a broader effort to replicate the initiative in 24 other states across the six geopolitical zones by April 2025. The STEM books and Shelves Distribution Project is designed to enhance the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in secondary schools across Nigeria. In total, 40,000 STEM textbooks from the first and second phases of this initiative will be distributed to public secondary schools in the 36 states and the FCT, with each identified school receiving 1,000 copies and a designated library bookshelf.
Arukwe highlighted the limited access to STEM education in Nigeria, noting the scarcity of materials necessary to enhance the learning process. The NNPC Foundation’s initiative aims to build interest among youth in science and technology to help them navigate the modern world.
The foundation’s efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on quality education and reducing inequality by ensuring underserved communities receive the support needed to boost STEM learning.
Malam Bello Audu, the Principal of the School for the Gifted, praised the foundation’s commitment to education and student development. He expressed hope for continued collaboration and support for ICT gadgets such as desktop computers, laptops, and internet facilities.
Students, including Anyanwu Ugonnaya, an SS3 science student, expressed gratitude for the donation, noting its potential to enhance academic excellence and assist in forthcoming examinations. The initiative is seen as a means to provide future generations, especially the less privileged, with easier access to knowledge.
