Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of the skills acquisition program offered by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to secure employment opportunities. This appeal was made during the inauguration of the NASRDA skills acquisition project in Abuja, which is executed in partnership with Grassroots Bridge Builders (GBB), a Non-Governmental Organization.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the initiative aims to train 60,000 youths, equipping them with essential skills that can transform their lives. Representing the President at the event, Mr. Adewale Adeogun, Chairman of the Tinubu National Think Tank (TnT), emphasized that this project is one of several government initiatives under its Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted a lack of awareness among the populace about these policies, stressing the need for education and involvement from NGOs, corporate bodies, and religious groups.
President Tinubu underscored the importance of embracing the program, hoping to lift at least 50 million Nigerians out of unemployment. He also mentioned that the Federal Government is in talks with companies and institutions to provide employment for those who benefit from the training. The plan includes introducing trained youths to ministries, agencies, and industries for job opportunities.
Dr. Matthew Adepoju, Director-General of NASRDA, noted the intelligence, hard work, and creativity of Nigerian youths, reaffirming the government’s commitment to equipping them with developmental skills. He pointed out that space science and technology could be leveraged to empower youths within their communities. He also recalled a pilot program focused on mast installation and telecom infrastructure management, which had already engaged over 60 participants.
Dr. Haruna Mohammed, Technical Adviser to the Director-General, mentioned that they are currently profiling participants. The pilot program had over 60 participants, and efforts are underway to expand it to 5,000 youths, with a request from ministries to train around 60,000 youths. The training will cover 27 different skills, including artistry, carpentry, and painting.
Mr. Ibrahim Igoche, CEO of GBB, called on other NGOs to partner with the government in enhancing the skills of Nigerian youths to alleviate poverty.
