Ilorin: The University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of transformation from a modest institution to one of Nigeria’s most esteemed universities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Unilorin has emerged as a national treasure and a rapidly growing global academic presence. Known for its ‘Better by Far’ philosophy, the university has continuously demonstrated excellence, stability, innovation, and dedication to public service. In the recent October/November 2024 accreditation exercise, Unilorin achieved a 100 percent success rate, with 36 out of 37 academic programs receiving full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC), reflecting its commitment to quality education.
Notable achievements include Sanusi Kazeem, a 400-level Mathematics student, who broke the Guinness World Record for the longest Mathematics lesson, and Faith Olabisi, an 18-year-old Accounting student, who qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Additionally, students Khafeelat Sadiq and Roseline Olarinde were awarded the Erasmus Mobility Scholarship for academic exchange.
Mr. Kunle Akogun, Director of Corporate Affairs, highlighted the university’s growth from three faculties at its inception to 16 faculties today, serving over 50,000 students. He credited the university’s high standards and stable academic calendar as factors that make it a top choice for admission seekers.
Under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole, Unilorin has strengthened its global presence through associations like the Association of West Africa Universities and the Association of African Universities. The university also achieved recognition in sports, with student-athletes qualifying for the World University Games.
The Mission:BRAIN chapter at Unilorin garnered multiple awards for its outreach and academic initiatives, while the Community-Based Experience and Services (COBES) initiative has been recognized by the World Health Organisation for its excellence.
Prof. Olugbenga Mokuolu, Chairman of the 50th anniversary committee, reiterated the university’s commitment to literacy, technology, and entrepreneurship. Unilorin’s research impact is evident, with staff members achieving high citation counts, reinforcing the university’s global academic influence.
Significant financial support, including a N2.5 billion TETFund allocation and a N4 billion Special High Impact Project grant, underscores Unilorin’s ongoing development. The university’s resilience in facing challenges like resource constraints and regulatory hurdles has been a testament to its unwavering pursuit of excellence.
Stakeholders and alumni have shown immense support, with donations totaling N600 million to further the university’s mission. Despite challenges, Unilorin remains committed to uninterrupted academic progress, maintaining its vision of becoming a world-class institution.
