Fourteen gubernatorial candidates in Taraba State have signed a peace accord ahead of the 2019 general election.
The signing ceremony which took place at the Taraba Police Command headquarters in Jalingo, was done in the presence of the commissioner of police other services chiefs and the state Independent Electoral Commissioner, Mr Baba Yusuf.
Mr Yusuf said the commission is committed to ensuring level playing ground for all the political parties in the state.
He urged the candidates to extend the message of peace to their supporters to maintain peace before, during and after the general election.
Most times we do have conflict at the announcement of elections results you must educate your supporters to maintain peace before, during and after the announcement of election results, Mr Yusuf said.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. David Akinremi said the police has the responsibilities to enforce peace in the society and it is committed to ensure a free and fair general election without fear or favour of anyone.
I call on all political candidates to shun violence as violence does no one good rather it destroys the foundation of the society.
One of the Governorship candidates of the All Blending Party, ABP, Mr Alfa Ibrahim who spoke on behave all the candidates present said that the signing of the peace pack was the show of commitment by all the parties to ensure a violence free general election in the state.
We will send this same message of peace to our supporters to maintain peace, he said.
Out of 24 registered Governorship candidates Taraba State, only 14 candidates were available to sign the peace accord.
