Mannheim: Recently, with support from the Information Office of the People’s Government of Qingdao, the A Gateway to the World (German edition: Ein Tor zur Welt: Qingdaos Aufstieg aus pers¶nlicher Sicht) reading event was successfully held in Mannheim, Germany. The event aimed to provide the German public with a clearer understanding of Qingdao, while strengthening friendship and cultural exchange between China and Germany. Wu Pengfei, Deputy Consul General at the Chinese Consulate General in Frankfurt, and Dr. Norbert Egger, former First Deputy Mayor of Mannheim and honorary citizen of Qingdao, attended the event.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Wu expressed respect to Dr. Egger, describing him as a friend of the Chinese people. He highlighted Dr. Egger’s efforts in promoting China-Germany friendship, which have helped many Germans understand China and its culture. Wu expressed hope that this friendship would inspire future generations to work together for a peaceful and prosperous world through cooperation and mutual learning.
Dr. Egger shared his inspiration behind writing A Gateway to the World, explaining his fascination with Chinese culture since his student days. He aimed to present the real China and Qingdao to German readers, highlighting Qingdao’s connections with Germany, as well as its history, culture, and development. During the event, Dr. Egger showcased photos from his visits to Qingdao, depicting the city’s rapid development.
The event also featured displays of Qingdao’s cityscape, postcards, and promotional materials, offering participants a vivid impression of Qingdao’s beauty and the charm of a modern, international metropolis.
