Ibadan: Comrade Akeem Abas of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ibadan, has officially launched his campaign for the chairmanship of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council. The event took place at the NUJ Press Centre in Iyaganku, Ibadan, and was attended by journalists from various chapels in the state, along with some former leaders of the union.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event was described as a renewed call for professionalism, unity, and credible leadership within the Oyo NUJ. During the event, Abas, an Editor with NAN, presented his seven-point manifesto, emphasizing his dedication to enhancing the union’s legacy with his Great Minds Team. He expressed his aspiration to build a more inclusive, transparent, and development-focused council.
Abas articulated his vision for the union, stating that leadership is not about privilege but purpose, and together they could create a union that listens, protects, and delivers for its members. He pledged to prioritize members’ welfare, invest in capacity building, modernize union operations, and uphold ethical standards in journalism across the state.
He also highlighted plans to reinvigorate the union’s social activities through sporting competitions, press week, media family days, and cultural events. Abas mentioned empowering the offices of NAWOJ and SWAN to implement impactful programs with full council support. To achieve economic empowerment and sustainable projects, he proposed pursuing government and corporate partnerships benefiting the union. His administration would focus on transparency, consultation, and accountability, with the institution of an Elders’ Advisory Council.
Comrade Lekan Shobowale, Director-General of the Great Minds Campaign Team, praised the outgoing chairman for his achievements and emphasized the need for leadership that would further elevate the union. He urged support for Abas as a vote for credible leadership, highlighting the team’s commitment to an open-door policy and collective responsibility.
Mr. Ayodeji Solanke, a Deputy Editor-in-Chief at NAN, endorsed Abas, noting his proven track record and the support from his colleagues. Mrs. Bisi Yomi-Layinka, a former NAWOJ Chairman, commended Abas’ track record and called for unity and fair play in the upcoming election.
Former NUJ leaders, including Chief Gbenga Ayoade, Comrade Cosmos Oni, Adewumi Faniran, and Dapo Falade, attended the event. They emphasized the importance of avoiding manipulations or candidate impositions and endorsed Abas as a competent and trustworthy leader for the union.
NAN reports that Abas is leading the Great Minds Team as the chairmanship candidate, with Abiodun Atilola of the Oyo State Ministry of Information running for the vice-chairmanship position. Other team members include Dayo Adu (FRCN) as Secretary, Khalid Imran (Oke Ogun Chapel) as Treasurer, Rofiat Olateju-Animashaun (NTA) as Assistant Secretary, and Olamiposi Ishola (BCOS) as Financial Secretary.
