Abuja: The Emerging Abuja Projects, organisers of Abuja’s first-ever Groovy December Festival, plans to attract up to 20 million tourists over the next four years.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, the Project Coordinator, made this announcement during the ‘Walk for Tourism’ awareness event held across key locations in Abuja in anticipation of the festival’s official launch.
The Walk for Tourism is intended to excite residents and generate anticipation for the Groovy December Festival. This festival will feature more than 35 events, showcasing Abuja’s culture, tourism, and entertainment offerings to both Nigerians and the global diaspora. Dr Ibe-Kalu mentioned that 45 coordinators are actively engaging with Nigerians abroad to promote the festival and encourage international participation.
The festival aims to establish Abuja as a major destination for cultural tourism, featuring activities such as hiking and guided tours at Karshi Waterfalls and Ushafa Village, food festivals, Suya competitions, and football tournaments. These activities are designed for residents, tourists, and families, offering something for everyone. Cultural showcases will include the Culture Fest, Miss Groovy December, and Groovy Tombola. Local vendors will also be able to showcase and sell their products, providing an opportunity for small business growth during the festival. Dr Ibe-Kalu expressed confidence that Groovy December will become a signature event for both the city and the country.
The festival is a collaborative effort between private organisers and government agencies, with comprehensive security measures in place for all participants. Funding primarily comes from private partners, while government agencies offer technical, professional, and regulatory support. The festival will also host the Emerging Abuja Diaspora Investment Forum on December 17, aimed at promoting investment, tourism, and economic opportunities by connecting diaspora investors with local opportunities.
During the event at the FCT Exhibition Pavilion, Imoh Ebong, Chairman of the Groovy December Central Planning Committee, described the festival as a landmark celebration. He noted that Groovy December aims to re-market Nigeria through Abuja, celebrating the country’s culture, people, and tourism potential. The festival, mandated by the FCT Administration, blends entertainment, culture, and tourism for both residents and visitors.
A key highlight of the event is the Walk for Tourism, which takes participants through major locations in Abuja to emphasize the excitement of the upcoming December festivities. The FCT Pavilion will serve as the festival hub, featuring a 24-hour music stage, a dedicated kiddies’ corner, and interactive family spaces, ensuring an inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere. Ebong encouraged residents and visitors to join the celebrations from December 15 to December 31, stating that the FCT Pavilion will be the focal point for diverse daily activities. The festival is expected to boost local tourism, support small businesses, and position Abuja as a prominent national and international festive destination.
