Abuja: The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has called upon contractors to enhance sanitation efforts within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by adopting efficient practices. Mrs. Kate Ogbonna, Acting Director of AEPB, emphasized this during a meeting with the 54 newly inaugurated contractors in the FCT.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ogbonna outlined the responsibilities of contractors, which include the regular and thorough evacuation of refuse from bins, bus stops, and other critical areas. During the meeting, she underscored the importance of understanding assignments clearly, as directed by the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, who has mandated that contractors should be proactive and adhere to their stipulated duties.
Ogbonna highlighted the meeting’s purpose, which was to facilitate direct communication between directors and contractors, aiming for a comprehensive understanding of their roles in maintaining a clean environment. She stressed that the FCT is expected to emulate the cleanliness of first-class cities globally, ensuring a healthy environment for both residents and visitors.
The emphasis on maintaining a clean environment with the help of newly inaugurated contractors started from November 17. Ogbonna noted the importance of interaction with contractors based on field observations, acknowledging that while some contractors meet expectations, others need improvement. She also stressed the role of FCT residents in maintaining cleanliness, highlighting the need for proper waste disposal and regular maintenance of their surroundings.
She assured the contractors that delayed payments would be addressed by the FCT Minister. The AEPB is collaborating with Mr. Felix Obuah, Coordinator for Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, to ensure environmental sustainability within the FCT.
Mr. Omoruyi Omogiade, Director of Solid Waste Management South within the agency, urged contractors to adhere to their expected duties to avoid penalties. He warned against indiscriminate dumping and the burning of waste, stating that such actions would lead to sanctions. Additionally, Omogiade advised contractors to equip their personnel with first aid kits for their safety during operations.
Ben Enwerem, Director of Solid Waste Management North, emphasized the need for contractors to maintain schedules for their daily tasks. He warned that AEPB would not compensate contractors who fail to perform adequately. Enwerem also mentioned that contractor evaluation charts would expedite payments and that their performance would be closely monitored to ensure the efficient discharge of duties to FCT residents.
Furthermore, Ibrahim Babayo, Chairman of Solid Waste Contractors, praised the new AEPB director for her commitment to maintaining an open dialogue with contractors. He pledged to ensure that Abuja becomes a model city in terms of cleanliness and environmental management.
