AFCON: Algeria beats Ivory Coast, to play Nigeria in semi-finals

Nigeria will face Algeria at the Cairo International Stadium in Sunday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final after the Desert Foxes beat Ivory Coast 4-3 on penalties after full time score was level at 1-1 in Thursday’s quarter-final.

Sofiane Feghouli’s opener after 20 minutes for Algeria was cancelled out by Jonathan Kodja, thus setting up a nervy penalty shootout.

Algeria’s win came hours after Nigeria clinched a hard-fought 2-1 win over South Africa in a dramatic match on Wednesday enabling them to advance to their 15th semi-final since they made their debut at the tournament in 1963.

The game will be the ninth meeting between both sides at tournament with the Eagles winning five of their last eight AFCON encounters as against Algeria’s three wins.

Among those reacting to the semi-final clash was Sunday Oliseh, who says the Eagles must be dominant in their play to stand a chance of reaching the final.

They played a good game and never gave up like the Eagles of old, the former Eagles captain and coach said.

They have found a good pattern which works for them now quick play on the ball and good regrouping when they are defending.

I believe if they (Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo) stay solid like they were against South Africa, we have a good chance of reaching the finals. He added.

A win for Nigeria on Sunday will see the Eagles reach the AFCON final for the seventh time.
