AFCON U-17 gets underway in Gabon

The 12th edition of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations has begun in Gabon in two cities, Port Gentil and the capital Libreville.

Hosts, Gabon will open their title quest against Guinea in a highly billed game with the home side looking to kick off their campaign on a high note.

However, they face a difficult opponent in the Junior Syllas who will be relying on the brilliance of France-based Gerard Sella Bangoura, who plies his trade for Saint Etienne in France, as well as Ibrahim Camara, who is based in Belgium.

Kenyan referee Davies Ogenche Omweno will be in charge of this tie assisted by Arsenio Chadreque Marengula from Mozambique and Souru Phatsoane from Lesotho. Jean-Jacques Ndala Ngambo from DR Congo will be the fourth official.

Cameroon will take on Ghana in the second game of the day at the same venue live on your World of Champions at 7:15pm CAT.

Meanwhile, there will be a minute of silence before the opener in honour of Gabonese midfielder MoAse Brou Abanga who passed away last month after suffering a cardiac arrest during a training session for his club FC 105 in Libreville.

The Ivorian-born Abanga featured for Italian sides Perugia and Brescia at the turn of the century and also represented Les Pantheres at AFCON 2010 and 2012.
