Post: Alleged N35m Fraud: Non-Availability of Bank Statement Stalls Ex-SDP Chairman’s Trial

Abuja: A Wuse Zone 2 Magistrates’ Court has adjourned the case involving the alleged N35 million financial misappropriation against Shehu Gabam, the former National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), to July 20. This decision was made due to the non-availability of a crucial bank statement needed as evidence in the trial.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Gabam was originally arraigned in May under case number DCC/10/2026, facing allegations of financial misappropriation amounting to N35 million during his tenure as the party’s national chairman. The court had granted him bail and scheduled the matter for further hearing.

During the proceedings, the court agreed to the adjournment after the prosecution explained the delay in obtaining the bank statement, which is essential for the case. Prof. Sadiq Gombe, the current National Chairman of the SDP, stated that efforts to secure the document from the bank had been unsuccessful, prompting the party to request the court to issue a subpoena for the bank to produce the statement.

Gombe elaborated that the bank cited the document’s bulkiness and the need for additional time to process and stamp it as reasons for the delay. The bank requested a week’s time to make the document available, leading to the court’s decision to postpone the hearing.

Expressing confidence in obtaining the document before the next hearing, Gombe assured that the party remains committed to pursuing the matter through legal channels. He emphasized the leadership’s optimism that the court proceedings will clarify the allegations against Gabam.
