APC chieftain harps on party supremacy

Faithful of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have been urged to uphold the supremacy of the party over personal gains.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Prosecution and an APC chieftain in Cross River State, Okoi Obono-Obla made the remark during an interview with Voice of Nigeria on the authentic governorship standard bearer.

Obono-Obla, who is also the Chairman, Special Presidential Investigation Panel for Recovery of Public Properties, condemned the deliberate attempt by Usani Uguru Usani, Nigeria’s Minister of Niger Delta Affairs to undermine the party.

Legality

According to him, I want to say with emphasis that the governorship candidate is Senator John Owan Enoh, who was elected in the primary conducted by the National Working Committee(NWC). The only organ of the party that is constitutionally authorised to conduct primaries election.

The NWC is also authorised by the electoral act 2010 as amended. Also, authorised by the Supreme Court judgment in Gado and CPC where the Supreme Court held that only the National Working Committee of a political party can conduct primaries for nomination of candidates for the office of Presidents, Governors, National and State Assemblies, posited Obono-Obla.

He continued, The primary election that produced John Owan-Enoh was authorised by the National Working Committee. People were sent from the headquarters in Abuja to conduct that primary.

On the other hand, the person, who says he is the governorship candidate, Usani Uguru Usani, Minister of Niger Delta Affairs), his primaries were conducted by people he selected. You cannot be a judge in your own course. Otherwise, there would not be authority in any political party, when you allow me, who wants to be governorship candidate to conduct my own primaries.

Obono-Obla, who is also a legal practitioner, further said, So, there is no doubt about that that John Owan-Enoh is the governorship candidate of the party in Cross River State and his name is with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. It is only INEC that can accept names submitted by NWC, not State Working Committee.

Resignation

On the constitutional requirement of a serving government appointee to run for elective office, Obono-Obla explained that Usani Usani must resign his appointment as to contest the governorship election scheduled for March 2019.

The constitution says that if a person, who is a political appointee and who wants to run for any elective office must resign before such a person contest election. So, anyone, who says he is contesting election must go, that is the law, he stated.

Meanwhile, an Abuja high court judgment presided over by Justice Olukayode Adeniyi has upheld the candidacy of Senator John Owan-Enoh as governorship standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress in Cross River State.

In another development, the Director General of Usani Campaign Organisation, Pastor Ene Cobham has dismissed claims that the judgment of December 13, 2018 presided over by Justice O. A,. Musa has been set aside by another High Court in Abuja.
