Enugu: Gov Peter Mbah of Enugu State has expressed confidence that the ongoing constitution amendment of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will enhance internal democracy within the party. Mbah shared his views at the South East Zonal Public Hearing on the Amendments of the APC Constitution, which took place in Enugu.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, emphasized the significance of the event for both the party and the South East geopolitical zone. He noted that it marked the first time the APC was conducting a constitution amendment public hearing across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, highlighting the party’s commitment to democratic reforms and broad-based participation.
The governor further stated that the public hearing is expected to fortify internal democracy, ensure inclusiveness in governance, and prepare the party for the 2027 general elections. He expressed gratitude to the party for choosing Enugu a
s the venue, underscoring the state’s political importance in the South East. Mbah assured that his administration would continue to support the party.
Mrs. Miriam Onuoha, the South-East Coordinator of the APC Constitution Amendment Committee, remarked that the review aims to expand the party and welcome new members. She mentioned that recent joiners, including Gov. Peter Mbah, would benefit from the amended constitution, which seeks to make newcomers feel welcome and attract others to the party.
Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman, South East, pointed out that the party’s current constitution, last amended in 2022, required updates to better reflect inclusivity, particularly with regard to women’s roles within the party. The amendment will facilitate greater participation of women in strategic positions.
Dr. Ben Nwoye, the APC Acting Chairman in the state, praised the selection of Enugu for the public hearing and noted the significance of the event following the governor’s recent defection to
the party.
