Abuja: The Nigerian Army has charged young soldiers of the 90 Regular Recruit Intake to uphold discipline, professionalism, and training standards in their military careers. The directive was delivered by the Chief of Training (Army), Maj.-Gen. Valentine Okoro, during the closing ceremony of Exercise Shining Star Course 12/2026 in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Okoro, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Training, Linkages and Integration, Brig.-Gen. Igbokwe Ukaegbu, emphasized that training is pivotal in preparing soldiers for contemporary security challenges. The exercise served as a crucial transition phase from basic training to unit life, allowing young soldiers to consolidate their skills under realistic field conditions.
The exercise was designed to enhance teamwork, leadership, endurance, initiative, and decision-making while reinforcing discipline, regimentation, and collective responsibility. Okoro highlighted that maintaining high standards during peacetime is essential for operational effectiveness.
Commanders were encouraged to continue progressive training and mentorship, address any weaknesses through ongoing training, and document lessons learned for future improvements. The Chief of Training also urged soldiers to maintain physical fitness, mental alertness, and professional competence, while demonstrating loyalty to constituted authority.
Maj.-Gen. John Lar, Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison, noted that the eight-week exercise was tailored to enhance the professional knowledge and practical skills of the young soldiers. He stressed the importance of applying the acquired knowledge with discipline, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility.
The exercise, which began on July 27 and concluded on Sept. 18, involved young soldiers from the 90 Regular Recruit Intake. It combined classroom instruction with practical exercises to prepare them for effective service in their respective units. The Army remains committed to providing quality training aligned with the Chief of Army Staff’s vision of building a professional, adaptable, combat-ready, and resilient force.
