Ilorin: The Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) has provided free medical treatment to over 2,000 indigent residents across the 16 local government areas of Kwara State. This initiative was part of a two-day free medical and surgical outreach, organized to coincide with the association’s 27th National Conference.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Lukman AbdulRahman, shared that the outreach aimed to serve 2,000 medical cases and 300 surgical cases. Prof. AbdulRahman noted that the turnout exceeded expectations, necessitating a reassessment of strategies to manage the clients efficiently. The outreach was supported by approximately 200 volunteers, including medical and allied healthcare workers from various fields.
The services provided during the outreach included medical consultations, eye care, cataract surgery, cervical cancer screening, family planning, laboratory investigations, and other specialist services. Preliminary screenings were conducted in the state’s three senatorial districts, with nearly 100 surgical cases identified for treatment. The outreach also focused on screening for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, along with laboratory tests for hepatitis and other health parameters.
The initiative was open to all residents, regardless of religious affiliation, emphasizing the non-discriminatory nature of healthcare provision. AbdulRahman highlighted that IMAN serves as the umbrella body for all healthcare workers who are Muslims, with the goal of integrating religious values into healthcare practices.
Prof. Habeeb Omokanye, Secretary of the Local Organising Committee, mentioned that the conference would include workshops on various topics such as psycho-trauma, student leadership, addiction prevention, and the Ibadah-friendly hospital initiative. The conference’s formal opening ceremony was scheduled for August 27, featuring scientific paper presentations, symposia, and the association’s Annual General Meeting where new national executives would be elected.
Dr. Yusuf Jamil, a Consultant Chemical Pathologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, emphasized the importance of health management from an Islamic perspective. He described health as a trust and blessing from Allah, urging patients to seek medical attention and preserve their health diligently.
