Bauchi: Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has mourned a former News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) staff member, Mr. Iliya Habila, who passed away on Thursday after a protracted illness. In a statement by Mr. Mukhtar Gidado, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, Mohammed described the late Habila as an exemplary journalist.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governor highlighted Habila’s integrity, courage, and professionalism, which set him apart in the media landscape. Mohammed noted that, as a former Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists in Bauchi and Secretary of the NUJ Adamawa Council, Habila demonstrated unwavering dedication to the ethics of journalism and the pursuit of truth.
The governor praised Habila’s contributions to public discourse and his role in strengthening the democratic space in Bauchi and beyond. In public service, Habila distinguished himself through his humility, competence, and leadership qualities. He served as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of Bogoro Local Government Area and was elected Executive Chairman of the Local Government during Mohammed’s administration. In these capacities, he worked for the development and unity of his people, leaving behind a legacy of service, accountability, and compassion.
Mohammed also mentioned that until his passing, Mr. Habila remained a committed and loyal member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), advocating for progress, good governance, and peaceful coexistence. He added that Habila’s loyalty, wisdom, and gentle disposition would be missed by his colleagues, the government, and all who had the privilege of working with him.
