Benin: Arch. Bishop Margaret Benson-Idahosa, the Archbishop of the Church of God Mission International (CGMI), has donated a solar-powered borehole to the Oko Correctional Centre in Benin. Represented by Bishop Wale Ajayi during the inauguration, Benson-Idahosa stated that the initiative aims to enhance the welfare of both inmates and staff at the facility. The donation is part of the activities commemorating her 83rd birthday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Assistant Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Zonal Headquarters, Zone G, Controller Mosue Oizuajemen, highlighted that the intervention comes at a crucial time for the facility. Oizuajemen noted that inadequate water supply has been a persistent issue, largely due to the high costs associated with diesel and fuel needed to power the water pumps. The irregular electricity supply has further compounded these challenges, making it difficult to maintain a consistent water supply.
Oizuajemen expressed confidence that the newly installed solar-powered system would serve as a reliable alternative power source for water pumping. The facility, which houses more than 1,500 inmates, is expected to benefit greatly from this intervention. She praised Benson-Idahosa for her ongoing support of the correctional service, recalling previous instances where the Archbishop had contributed borehole water to the center. The latest gesture underscores Benson-Idahosa’s dedication to improving the welfare conditions for both inmates and staff at the correctional centre.
