Biotechnology Agency Assures Nigerians on GMOs Safety

Abuja: The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) has assured Nigerians of the health safety of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). The Director-General of NBRDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, disclosed this in a statement by Mrs. Toyin Omozuwa, the agency’s spokesperson, indicating the agency’s commitment to ensuring public health safety amidst ongoing debates surrounding GMOs.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mustapha emphasized that the debates and conversations around GMOs often arise from general misinformation. He stated that the NBRDA is dedicated to bridging this gap through evidence-based engagement, sensitization, and research-driven advocacy. The agency is focused on promoting and conducting innovative research in agriculture, health, industry, and the environment, with a core commitment to humanity.

Mustapha highlighted that the agency’s top priority is the well-being of Nigerians, assuring that there will be no compromise on public health or safety in their pursuit of innovation. He stated that GMOs are globally recognized as safe for both human health and the environment. In Nigeria, GMO approval is strictly regulated by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA).

He further explained that GMOs undergo rigorous international standard testing and research before being deemed safe. In Nigeria, no GMO product enters circulation without comprehensive approval and risk assessment by the NBMA. Mustapha emphasized the importance of Nigerians understanding the safety of GMOs.

The NBRDA has intensified efforts to educate and involve various stakeholders, including farmers, policymakers, scientists, youth, and civil society, in biotechnology. Mustapha mentioned that the agency conducts training programs, community outreach, open forums, and field demonstrations to rebuild public confidence and counter misinformation with factual information.
