Abuja: The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr Aminu Yusuf, describing his passing as a major loss to the commission and the country.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the announcement was made in a statement on Friday in Abuja, by the Director, Public Affairs Department, Mrs Adelayo Olurode. Olurode stated that Yusuf, the Talban Wushishi, died in Abuja on Friday, following a brief illness at the age of 66.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that Yusuf was sworn in as the eighth substantive chairman of the commission by President Bola Tinubu on December 3, 2025. He had since provided leadership and championed a Seven-Point Agenda aimed at repositioning the commission.
Yusuf, born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, had a record of public service in education, governance, grassroots politics, and community development. He previously served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, Member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, and Board Member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Yusuf also held the position of Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State, among other positions.
Olurode mentioned that until his appointment as NPC Chairman, Yusuf was the National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna. He was also Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.
‘The commission has lost a dedicated patriot, an administrator, and a leader whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering,’ she said. Olurode extended condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the Government and people of Niger State, and the Yusuf family.
‘On behalf of the Honourable Federal Commissioners, the Director-General, management, and entire staff of the National Population Commission, we extend our deepest condolences,’ she said. She prayed Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family, friends, and associates the fortitude to bear the loss.
