CECAFA members vow to improve football in region

Seven members of the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) has vowed to help create foundations to improve standards of the game in the region.

The FA Presidents from Uganda, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zanzibar, Kenya and Tanzania met on Wednesday afternoon and deliberated on a number of issues during the meeting held at the Uganda FA headquarters in Mengo.

This brain storming meeting was organized to discuss about the current and future state of the CECAFA football, said President of the Uganda FA, Moses Magogo.

The F.A Presidents came up with a 9 point resolution programme that is aimed at helping football development in the CECAFA region.

President of the Tanzania FA, Jamal Malinzi said that because they have a duty to improve football in the region, they decided to meet and map a way forward. We had only the Women’s competition last year and all the other events did not take place. We cannot continue like this, added Malinzi.

The hosting Uganda FA President, Moses Magogo said that it is high time the region changed in its approach of doing things for the betterment of the sport. We need to learn to market our competitions better, he added.

He said they will communicate their resolutions to the CEFAFA President, CAF and FIFA. It was also communicated that the FA Presidents of Djibouti, Sudan and South Sudan communicated that they could not make it for the meeting with apologies.

The resolutions that were passed include; amend the current statures of the CECAFA constitution, convene a congress for CECAFA as soon as possible, ensure that CECAFA region gets permanent headquarters and improve on the CECAFA competitions with emphasis on the youth events (U-15, U-17 girls and U-20) as well as beach soccer.

They also resolved to improve the technical aspects of the game in terms of refereeing, coaching, sports administration, medical and the like, improve marketing and communication for the CECAFA region with re-branding, CECAFA region to submit an official bid to host the Africa Nations Cup finals, CECAFA region to have effective representation on the CAF Executive Committee and come up with a proposal to fund the headquarters of CECAFA.
