Post: Chaingang Mountain Bike Festival Set to Promote Biking and Sport Competitions in Nigeria

Abuja: The Organising Committee for the fourth edition of the ‘Chaingang’ Mountain Bike (MTB) festival has announced that this year’s event will focus on promoting mountain biking races and other sporting competitions in Nigeria.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the organisers emphasized the festival’s objectives, which include encouraging an active lifestyle, fostering community spirit, and advocating for safety and environmental stewardship.

Chidera Obijiofor, Chair of the Festival Media Committee, stated that the event, scheduled for November 22 in Abuja, will spotlight the talents of riders, runners, and hikers. Participants will engage in various outdoor competitions set against the backdrop of Abuja’s rugged mountain terrain, promising a day filled with exciting activities and community engagement.

The festival’s theme, ‘Be Ya Nu Abuja Pe (Let’s Go to Abuja Mountains)’, will feature several events such as mountain biking races, a trail run, and a scenic hike. The mountain biking competition will include a 42 km race for males and a 35 km race for females, characterized by challenging courses with steep singletrack, rocky ridgelines, and fast descents. Participants can expect punchy climbs, demanding switchbacks, and stretches where speed meets stunning skylines.

Additionally, the festival will include a 20 km trail run with varied terrain, providing runners with quick climbs, runnable downhills, and rewarding summit views. A 6 km day hike to the Mpape Crushed Rocks site will offer hikers scenic vistas and photo opportunities. The event will also feature a VIP Race and a Children’s Race at Junior Secondary School Mpape, offering family-friendly excitement with the presence of safety marshals.

Obijiofor described the festival terrain as quintessentially Abuja, featuring stony outcrops and gravel-strewn tracks that challenge participants while offering dramatic skyline views. The courses will include natural obstacles and seasonal washes, ensuring a thrilling yet demanding experience for all.

Safety measures are a priority, with routes mapped out to include safety-first signage, medical support points, and marshals at technical sections. Beyond the competitions, the festival will serve as a vibrant outdoor carnival, featuring cultural dances, live music, and refreshments. Local vendors and community groups will also be present to share food and crafts.

Competitive entries require pre-registration and a safety briefing, with protective gear mandatory for mountain bikers. Trail runners and hikers are advised to carry hydration and sun protection, while event medical teams and rescue marshals will be available throughout all routes. The Chaingang MTB Festival remains committed to promoting active outdoor lifestyles, trail stewardship, and road safety awareness for cyclists and trail users.
