Post: Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria Calls for Enhanced Board Leadership Amid Economic Changes


Lagos:The Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (CIoD) has emphasized the need for stronger leadership and oversight in boardrooms as business landscapes evolve due to factors like Artificial Intelligence (AI), sustainability issues, and global economic shifts. This was highlighted by Mr. Adetunji Oyebanji, President of CIoD, during a briefing about the institute’s upcoming 2026 Annual Directors Conference, set for November 10 and 11 in Lagos.



According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the conference, themed ‘Reimagining the Boardroom for Inclusive and Sustainable National Prosperity in the New Economy,’ seeks to address the changing roles and responsibilities of boards and directors in today’s dynamic business environment. The event will cover topics such as strategic competitiveness, entrepreneurial growth, access to capital, AI, board accountability, and value creation.



Dr. Waheed Olagunju, Chairman of the National Organising Committee, mentioned that the conference program aims to foster discussions, networking, and professional engagement among leaders across sectors. Key sessions will explore themes like strategic competitiveness in a volatile global order, entrepreneurial growth acceleration, and board accountability in the AI era. The event will also include discussions on boardrooms as drivers of value creation and a fireside chat on raising boardroom standards.



The conference will feature a keynote address by Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma, former Minister of Budget and National Planning and Chairman of Seplat Energy Plc, with President Bola Tinubu invited as Special Guest of Honour. Notable speakers include Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Mrs. Nonye Ayeni, Dr. Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, Mr. Sunny Iroche, Ms. Rabi Isma, and Dr. Nneka Okekearu.



A Business Meets Government Dinner on November 11, chaired by Dr. Umaru Kwairanga, will focus on ‘ESG, Sustainability and the Climate Agenda,’ supporting the Nigerian government’s vision of achieving a one trillion-dollar economy by 2030.



Dr. Taiwo Nolas-Alausa, Director-General of CIoD, reiterated the conference’s significance in addressing leadership, governance, and decision-making issues, noting the dual opportunities and responsibilities presented by the new economy, particularly with the influence of AI. The CIoD remains committed to facilitating informed dialogues among those providing strategic direction and oversight in organizations.
