Abuja: The Joint National Assembly Committee on Constitution Review has approved the creation of a new state in the South-East geo-political zone. The committee made this announcement in a statement issued on Sunday and also revealed the establishment of a sub-committee to further consider the creation of states and local government areas across other zones of the country.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the unanimous resolution was reached after the committee reviewed 55 proposals for state creation across the country. Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, who has been a consistent advocate for the initiative, stated that the request was based on principles of equity, justice, and fairness, as the zone currently has only five states.
In his remarks, Deputy Senate President, Sen. Barau Jibrin, encouraged members to gather support from colleagues at both the national and state assemblies to ensure that the resolutions are successfully passed during voting. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the initiative to ensure participation from all parts of the country.
