Abuja: The Peace, Security and Development Forum (PSDF) has called on the media, civil society groups, and the general public to support security forces in the ongoing effort to combat insecurity. The Secretary of the forum, Mr. Afolabi Samuel, made the call while briefing newsmen on the state of the nation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Samuel highlighted that Nigeria is confronting formidable non-state actors whose aim is to instill fear, cripple socio-economic development, and derail the country’s economic recovery efforts. He noted that the Armed Forces, under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, have intensified clearance operations across flashpoint areas and deserve unwavering national support.
Samuel emphasized the sacrifices made by the troops, stating, “Our troops are making sacrifices daily to restore peace. We have lost brothers and fathers who paid the supreme price to protect this nation. Their sacrifices must never be in vain.” He urged Nigerians to continue praying for the CDS and his troops, expressing confidence in Gen. Oluyede’s experience and capacity, especially given his previous role as Chief of Army Staff.
The forum secretary specifically appealed to media practitioners to avoid sensational headlines that could embolden adversaries or dampen troop morale. He also urged civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to use their influence and grassroots presence to promote peace, unity, and national resilience.
“This is the time for responsible reporting. The media must help build confidence, not weaken the morale of our gallant troops,” Samuel stated. He also addressed the general public, urging them not to succumb to fear, as the adversaries aim to destabilize the economy and weaken national cohesion. Samuel reassured that the economy is on a recovery path and stressed the importance of standing strong against these threats.
Samuel commended Gen. Oluyede and the Armed Forces for their sustained efforts despite daunting challenges, expressing optimism that Nigeria would eventually triumph. “With the will of the people and God on our side, we will conquer. We must stand firmly with our security forces and our beloved country at this critical time,” he concluded.
