Lagos: The Deaf Supporters Development Initiative (DSDI) has expressed its support for Nigeria’s leadership under President Bola Tinubu, urging for a greater inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in government policies. DSDI President, Mr. Afolabi Dahunsi, made this call during a public lecture on Democracy, Disability, and Good Governance in Lagos, which was held to commemorate the 2025 International Day for PWDs.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event, organized by DSDI, was themed ‘The Renewed Hope Agenda: A Life-Saving Intervention for the Deaf and Persons with Disabilities.’ Dahunsi emphasized that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda promised to include PWDs in governance, highlighting the importance of fulfilling this commitment. He pointed out that despite the Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018, discrimination remains prevalent, with many PWDs still facing unemployment and economic marginalization.
Dahunsi called for government intervention to dismantle discrimination, noting that economic hardships disproportionately affect the PWD community, and short-term solutions are insufficient to address unemployment. He also highlighted the vulnerability of deaf individuals to crime due to communication barriers, underscoring the need for action against insecurity.
Speaking at the event, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, represented by Mr. Yusuf Olukolu, discussed how societal attitudes and systemic barriers exacerbate the challenges faced by PWDs. He stressed the importance of inclusion in decision-making, community programs, and public discussions. Omotoso also highlighted the state’s initiatives, such as the establishment of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and various infrastructure upgrades, including accessible BRT terminals, public parks, and government complexes. He asserted that inclusion involves ensuring that every individual can thrive and that the dignity and rights of PWDs are respected.
