Defence Headquarters Refutes Coup Allegations, Affirms Support for President Tinubu

Abuja: The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly refuted an online report suggesting a connection between the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary events and an attempted coup. The report was deemed false and malicious by the DHQ.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, clarified in a statement that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) had not mentioned or implied any coup attempt. The report was criticized as a deliberate effort to instill fear and distrust among the populace. Gusau noted that the independence anniversary parade was postponed to allow President Bola Tinubu to attend a strategic bilateral meeting abroad and to enable troops to maintain ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations across the country.

Gusau elaborated that the investigation involving 16 army officers was part of a routine internal procedure aimed at maintaining discipline and professionalism. He assured that the findings of this investigation would be disclosed to the public when appropriate.

The DHQ called on Nigerians to dismiss the erroneous publication and continue supporting the security forces in their mission to safeguard lives and ensure peace. The statement reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s steadfast loyalty to the constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
