Post: Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns on Health Grounds


Abuja: Minister of Defence Badaru Abubakar has resigned his appointment with immediate effect. In a letter dated Dec. 1, sent to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar stated that he was stepping down due to health reasons. Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced this development in a statement issued on Monday.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed his gratitude to Abubakar for his service to the nation. The President is expected to announce Abubakar’s successor to the Senate later in the week. Abubakar, who is 63 years old, served as the governor of Jigawa from 2015 to 2023 before being appointed as the defence minister on Aug. 21, 2023.



His resignation comes at a time when President Tinubu has recently declared a national security emergency, with further details regarding its scope anticipated to be disclosed soon.
