The Ministry of Defence has created a new directorate to manage military information as it ramps up efforts to end the insurgency in the Northeast.
The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche announced this in Abuja, during the unveiling of the Directorate of Defence Media Operations.
Major General Enenche said: “The new outfit of the Armed Forces of Nigeria is the latest strategic initiative of the Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, in line with military efforts on media operations.
“The channel of communicating the operational activities of the Nigerian Military to the general public has been streamlined to one source, which is henceforth, the Directorate of Defence Media Operations.”
The Directorate of Defence Media Operations is to disseminate information on multi-agency operations of which the Nigerian Military is the lead agency.
The outfit is responsible for press briefings, releases and other press activities on all Armed Forces internal and international engagements.
The Director, Defence Media Operations, Brigadier General, Bernard Onyeoko, emphasized that the Armed Forces was committed to resolving the current security challenges across the country.
He added that it was imperative for the military to keep the citizens abreast with activities of their various operations.
Director Nigerian Defence Information, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said: “There is a need to harmonize the Information management and delivery from various operations in the Armed Forces and other sister agencies to end insurgency in Nigeria.”
Brigadier General Nwachukwu explained that the Directorate, Defence Media Operations, was in charge of managing information on military operations only while the Directorate of Defence Information would focus on other aspects.
