Abuja: The National Defence College (NDC) has organized a shooting tournament for the graduating course – 34 participants to test, boost their marksmanship and foster team spirit. The shooting competition, which is the first of its kind in the history of the college, took place at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Saturday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the tournament featured a 50m Rifle section and a 25m pistol section. In his remarks, the NDC Commandant, Rear Adm. Abdullahi Ahmed, emphasized that the college prioritizes not only academic excellence but also physical fitness and mental well-being. He highlighted that shooting is a sport demanding discipline, concentration, precision, and harmony between mind and body, qualities essential for strategic leaders. Ahmed encouraged participants to set aside their rigorous academic program, engage in the competition with sportsmanship, and enjoy the memorable occasion.
Rear Adm. Ahmed reiterated his commitment to promoting physical well-being through regular sporting activities, which provide avenues for healthy recreation, interaction, teamwork, and fostering enduring friendships. He expressed hope that the competition would be remembered for both the enjoyment and the strengthened friendships.
Chief of Defence Administration, Defence Headquarters, Rear Adm. Gideon Kachim, noted that shooting skills are applicable in daily life, requiring concentration, patience, precision, and sound judgment. He stated these qualities are indispensable in strategic leadership and decision-making. Kachim praised the competition for embodying teamwork and friendship, qualities the NDC aims to cultivate.
Kachim lauded the college commandant’s visionary leadership in introducing the shooting competition as part of the graduating activities, commending the initiative as a complement to the college’s commitment to developing well-rounded strategic leaders. He also congratulated the course -34 participants on their graduation, commendably noting the dedication, discipline, and resilience demonstrated throughout the course. He encouraged them to continue exemplifying professionalism, integrity, and strategic outlook instilled by the NDC as they look towards their future responsibilities.
