Enugu: The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly is committed to meeting their demands in the ongoing constitutional amendment process. Delivering his address at the Retreat of the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Enugu, Mr. Kalu, who is the chairman of the panel, emphasized the importance of creating a more functional constitution to empower local governments, enhance electoral justice, strengthen fiscal federalism, guarantee women’s full participation in governance, and improve accountability at all levels.
According to Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Kalu highlighted the critical nature of the gathering, describing it as a convergence of minds dedicated to perfecting the country’s democracy. He stressed the need for a constitution that works for Nigerians, pointing to the desire for empowered local governments, reformed electoral systems, and enhanced participation for women in governance. Mr. Kalu also called on the committee members to focus on national interest and unity, urging them to speak with one voice and prioritize issues that bring people together.
Mr. Kalu outlined three guiding principles for the committee’s deliberations: unity of purpose, legislative discipline, and prioritizing national interest. He stated the necessity for broad, bipartisan support for the proposed amendments, emphasizing the importance of achievable, high-impact reforms that enjoy widespread public support. He urged the committee to focus on what is best for Nigeria and to resist overloading the amendment agenda with contentious proposals.
The Deputy Speaker expressed his gratitude to the lawmakers for their dedication and commitment to the nation’s progress. He concluded by encouraging the committee to leave the retreat with a clear roadmap for constitutional reform, aiming to secure passage of the amendments in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly. Mr. Kalu highlighted the historic nature of their endeavour and its potential to shape Nigeria’s destiny for generations to come.
