Abuja: Prof. Benjamin Ayatunji, Director of Physical and Life Sciences at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has emphasized that investing in planetarium infrastructure could significantly advance Nigeria’s space development efforts.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ayatunji highlighted in a recent interview that planetariums are essential for positioning Nigeria within the global space economy, which is projected to reach one trillion dollars by 2040. He described planetariums as crucial yet under-utilized tools for nurturing future astronauts, scientists, and space professionals.
Ayatunji explained that planetariums, with their hemispheric domes, provide immersive learning experiences that can enhance traditional classroom education, especially in STEM fields. He noted that planetariums are instrumental in astronaut development, offering training environments for various space-related scenarios.
He further elaborated on the role of planetariums in promoting space tourism, noting their ability to build public awareness and understanding through advanced simulation technologies. This, he said, enhances public confidence in commercial space travel by offering virtual demonstrations and immersive storytelling.
Discussing the impact of emerging technologies, Ayatunji stated that virtual and augmented realities are set to revolutionize both planetarium infrastructure and astronaut training. He mentioned that technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Robotics would enhance simulation capabilities for space missions and tourism.
Ayatunji also emphasized the strategic importance of planetariums in implementing the National Space Policy and Programme (NSPP), as they inspire future astronauts, expand STEM participation, and bolster public interest in space science. He pointed out the economic opportunities for investors, noting that even mobile planetariums could become profitable ventures.
He recommended establishing regional state-of-the-art planetariums across Nigeria, integrating planetarium learning into the national education system, and fostering public-private partnerships to support long-term space development.
